The Cosmetic Organic and Natural Standard (COSMOS) is responsible for setting standards for the cosmetics industry in Europe. The COSMOS marking on cosmetics packaging verify that the product has met specific requirements for organic and natural products. More than 1,600 cosmetics manufacturers in 45 countries follow the requirements set by the COSMOS standard.

The European organization began in 2002 after meeting at a trade show to discuss global standards. Compromised of 5 members, the organization published the international standard in 2010. Within the standard there are four separate signatures: organic, natural, COSMOS certified, and COSMOS approved.

The 5 organizations that created the COSMOS did so in an effort to regulate the quality of cosmetics products. The standard imposes global regulations for all cosmetics products to simplify the certification process, increase transparency, and increase consumers trust in products, especially those labeled natural or organic.

For a product to be labeled organic under COSMOS it must use only organic ingredients. To be labeled a natural product, it must be made of natural ingredients or come from ingredients of natural origin.
