Particle Size Analysis & Particle Size Distribution Testing

Today, Contract Laboratory, Inc. received a request from a Pharmaceutical Corporation for a FDA GMP laboratory to perform particle size analysis and particle size distribution testing. In the past 12 years, ContractLaboratory.com has worked with many corporations in many industries on their particles size analysis. Particle Size Analysis and Particle Size Distribution Testing are unique to “powdered” materials used in several industries from soils for construction to nanomaterials used in pharmaceuticals.  Particle Size Analysis and Particle Size Distribution are tightly controlled laboratory testing techniques used to determine the behavior and nature of these “powdered” materials within various size distributions and applications.

There are many different ASTM Standards that can be met through Particle Size Analysis and Particle Size Distribution Testing.  There are other industry standard techniques defined by the ISO 13320 Standard which “provides guidance on instrument qualification and size distribution measurement of particles in many two-phase systems (e.g. powders, sprays, aerosols, suspensions, emulsions and gas bubbles in liquids) through the analysis of their light-scattering properties”.

Particle Size Analysis can range from a simple Sieve Shaker Method for the testing of the gradation of soils to determine load-bearing strength properties in the construction industry to very specific particle size requirements within the paints & coatings, pigment, cosmetic, printer toner, polymer additive, or pharmaceutical industries where testing techniques such as Laser Diffraction may be used.  There are many other test methods available such as the Electroresistance Counting Method using the the Coulter Principle, and Acoustic Spectroscopy or Ultrasound Attenuation Spectroscopy.
