biocompatibility testing

Biocompatibility testing is done to determine the compatibility of materials with living tissue.

Biocompatibility testing is commonly done for medical devices with testing ranging from screening of new materials to safety evaluations. The term “biocompatibility” refers to the compatibility of materials with living tissue. Biocompatibility testing is required for all medical devices such as pacemakers, stents, hip and knee replacements, inhalers, and even syringes.

The most common biocompatibility tests that all medical devices must receive are cytotoxicity, sensitization, and irritation testing, all checking for the presence of any toxic or leachable substances.
