Today, Contract Laboratory received a request from a company needing an Oil Laboratory for recovered hydrocarbon / oil testing according to Standard and RTFOT viscosity tests in accordance with latest edition of ASTM D3381 or AASHTO Designation: M 226-80 plus one at 135 deg. C 2. Penetration test ASTM D 946 and AASHTO M 20 (Penetration @ 25°C)
RTFOT stands for “Rolling Thin Film Oven Test” and is a type of testing done on asphalt binders. Rolling Thin Film Oven Test RTFOT assesses the effect of heat and air on a moving film of semi-solid asphalt material, and is used to simulate short-term aging of asphalt binders that generally occurs during the hot mixing process. RTFOT can be used to calculate the change in mass due to heating, but also provides a sample of aged material for more in-depth testing and analysis. Results of this type of testing are determined by comparing asphalt measurements taken before and after the material has been heated in the oven for 75 minutes at 163°C. The rolling thin film oven used in this type of testing is a very specific laboratory oven that must include a flow meter and a thermometer. The oven must also contain a viewing glass and be preset to 163°C.
